Keep instrument in case when not playing

Protect from extremes of weather/temperature

Clean instrument with soft cloth after playing

Strings

Replace when frayed or dull sounding

Replace strings at least once a year

Bridge

Should fit perpendicular to top, its feet resting flat and aligned with notches in F-holes.

Warped bridge should be replaced

Pegs

Should turn smoothly

Chalk may be added if slipping

Peg dope may be used if sticking

Continued sticking or slipping calls for professional repair

Bows

Bow hair stretches – never force bow screw if it will not tighten

Bow hair wears out and becomes too smooth to hold rosin

Bow should be rehaired at least once a year
